Instagram Plus: A Grounded Look at Meta’s New Premium Tier

It seems like every social platform is moving toward a subscription model these days. Meta’s latest addition is Instagram Plus, a premium tier priced around £3.99 a month that sits alongside their existing Meta Verified offering.

When new paid features drop, business owners and creators often panic that they need to pay to stay relevant. So, let’s look at what Instagram Plus actually is, how it works, and whether it’s a necessary expense for your brand.

What is Instagram Plus and How Does it Work?

Instagram Plus isn't a separate app, and it doesn't replace the free version of Instagram we're all used to. Instead, it adds a suite of premium tools to your existing account. Interestingly, the subscription focuses almost entirely on Instagram Stories rather than the main feed or Reels.

Here are the core features you get for the monthly fee:

  • Story Spotlight: This is the most talked-about feature. Once every seven days, you can highlight a specific Story, giving it a soft boost and moving it to the front of your followers’ Story lineup.

  • Story Extend: Instead of disappearing after the standard 24 hours, you can choose to keep a Story visible for 48 hours.

  • Multiple Story Audiences: A helpful organisation tool that allows you to segment your Story viewers into distinct lists (e.g., VIP customers, local clients, or a specific community group) rather than just a single "Close Friends" list.

  • Behind-the-Scenes Tools: Subscribers also get access to custom bio fonts, custom app icons, and deeper analytics, including "Story Rewatch" insights to see what content is really holding attention.

The Pros: Where It Adds Value

For certain strategies, these tools can genuinely be quite helpful.

  • A Gentle Visibility Boost: Because most users just tap the first Story they see rather than scrolling through their entire lineup, using the Story Spotlight feature for an important announcement (like a new service launch or a community update) can help ensure it gets seen.

  • Better Audience Segmentation: If you serve different types of clients, the Multiple Audiences feature is a practical way to speak directly to the right people without overwhelming everyone else.

  • Relieving the 24-Hour Pressure: Extending a Story to 48 hours is great for international audiences across different time zones or simply reducing the pressure to constantly post new content.

The Cons: Why You Might Want to Skip It

As with any tool, there are limitations, and it’s important to look at the bigger picture.

  • Subscription Fatigue: If you are already paying £11.99 a month for Meta Verified, adding another £3.99 a month for Instagram Plus adds up. It’s a recurring cost for features that are nice to have, rather than essential.

  • The Saturation Problem: The Story Spotlight feature sounds great in theory, but if a large portion of your followers subscribe to Instagram Plus and all use Spotlight at the same time, the advantage is completely diluted.

  • It Doesn't Fix Bad Content: A premium feature cannot make an audience engage with content that doesn't resonate. It doesn't guarantee reach or magically change the algorithm in your favour.

The Verdict

Instagram Plus is a niche offering. If your marketing strategy relies heavily on deep, daily community building through Instagram Stories, it might be worth testing it out for a month to see if the insights and segmentation tools make your day-to-day operations easier.

However, for the vast majority of freelancers, small businesses, and brands, you really don't need to worry about missing out. The core of good marketing remains the same: understanding your audience, providing genuine value, and building trust. You don't need a premium subscription to do that.
